About Library Exposed
Library Exposed is an independent, community-based project dedicated to increasing transparency around books available in the Rockwood School District.
The site was established to provide organized access to information about library materials that some families may consider controversial or sensitive. Its core purpose is simple: to ensure that parents and community members can review available materials directly and understand the policies that govern their selection and reconsideration.
Rockwood operates under an “opt-out” system, meaning students generally have access to materials unless a parent actively restricts it. Some families prefer greater clarity and involvement in these decisions. For that reason, Library Exposed supports consideration of an “opt-in” approach, which would require affirmative parental consent before access to certain materials.
Our method is intentionally structured. We share selected excerpts so readers can evaluate content without added interpretation or commentary. We do not assess literary merit or assign intent. The emphasis is on documentation so individuals may draw their own conclusions.
Although the district maintains a formal reconsideration process, most challenges do not result in changes to library collections. Library Exposed was developed in part to ensure that visibility and access to information are not dependent on the outcome of any single review.
How This Project Began
Library Exposed began in the fall of 2021 during a period of active discussion within the Rockwood community about specific titles available in district libraries. Parents raised questions regarding age appropriateness, review procedures and how concerns were formally evaluated.
In attempting to research both the materials and the district’s policies, many families found that information was dispersed across multiple sources and not easily consolidated. Reviewing book content required independent investigation, and understanding procedural guidelines often meant navigating lengthy policy documents.
The project was created to bring that information into one organized reference point — assembling excerpts, outlining procedures and linking to relevant policies so that community members could examine primary materials directly and understand the framework surrounding them.
Community Response & Impact
Since its launch in 2021, Library Exposed has been used by families seeking greater transparency into school library collections. While the project began locally within the Rockwood School District, parents beyond the district have reached out to share how documented excerpts and process explanations have helped them better understand and navigate library access in their own communities.
Parents have described using the site to:
Understand formal challenge procedures
Clarify how local review committees function
Reference documented excerpts when discussing concerns
Initiate more informed conversations within their own districts
One Rockwood parent shared:
“When we were concerned about books at our middle school, the site helped us better understand the challenge process and pursue greater transparency.”
Another parent outside Missouri wrote:
“We discovered several of the same titles in our district and used the documented excerpts as a reference when reviewing our own library collections.”
Other readers have noted that having primary source excerpts available in one place made discussions with skeptical friends or family members more productive and fact-based.
While perspectives differ across communities, these responses demonstrate a shared desire for clarity — not alarm, but awareness. The goal of Library Exposed has remained consistent: to document information so families can make informed decisions according to their own convictions.
A Resource for Other Communities
While this project began with a focus on Rockwood, many of the books discussed here appear in districts across the country. For that reason, this site may also serve as a reference for families in other communities seeking clarity around similar materials and review processes.
Library Exposed exists to support informed dialogue, civic awareness and thoughtful participation in educational decision-making.
