About Library Exposed

Welcome to Library Exposed, a community-driven initiative that operates independently of the Rockwood School District. Our purpose is to cultivate a thoughtful dialogue on the intricate balance between protecting our children's mental and emotional well-being and honoring the principles of free expression within educational contexts. We scrutinize books available in the district that may contain content deemed controversial or sensitive by some with the aim of enlightening and empowering our community members.

Our methodology involves sharing selected excerpts from various books, illustrating the nature of the content in question, without overlaying personal interpretations. This approach respects the originality of the texts and their authors, fostering an environment where individuals can form their own informed opinions. Our intent is not to critique these works' literary worth but to shed light on content that has prompted concern, thereby contributing to a more informed and discerning community perspective.

Library Exposed is founded on the principles of transparency and informed choice. We champion an "opt-in" approach over "opt-out," advocating for parental engagement in selecting appropriate reading materials for their children. By advocating for a policy that requires explicit consent for access to certain materials, we aim to cultivate an educational environment that is both safer and more respectful of diverse viewpoints. Such an environment would encourage constructive discussions and ensure that our children's educational experiences are supportive and free from undue distress, while still exposing them to a broad spectrum of literary works.

We are particularly mindful of the potential for high school students to access material that might not be suitable for their younger siblings. Recognizing that teenagers' readiness for adult themes can vary widely, even within the high school demographic, underscores the importance of a nuanced approach to content access.

We warmly invite all members of the community to participate in this crucial conversation, working collaboratively towards educational practices that safeguard our children's psychological and emotional well-being, without diminishing the value of a rich and varied literary education. Let's unite in our endeavor to foster a community that engages in respectful, informed dialogue about the content in our schools, ensuring a nurturing and balanced educational atmosphere for all our children.
